World Fantasy Convention
On October 27 and 28, I attended my first-ever World Fantasy Convention, which was held in Kansas City (essentially my backyard). I sat on a panel about romance in fantasy, and I heard from leaders in the fields of both fantasy and horror. I was even convinced to pick up a horror novel (The Fervor by Alma Katsu). I usually plant myself firmly on this side of dark fantasy, but it was Halloween and the mood was right and the book was fantastic.
I also had the chance to meet about a dozen members of my online writing group, many of whom I have never met before (in person). My hopes to show them the Kansas City dining scene were dashed by awful, fridig weather that kept us rooted in the convention hotel, but the company was excellent. I feel so lucky to have this great group of writers to support me on this often fraught but ultimately rewarding writing journey.

Author’s Corner
I'm about halfway through my first draft of The Spaces in Between, which inevitably means that it's time for a visit from my good friend The Mid-Novel Blues. Most writers I know identify this lull about halfway through any long project where you feel like it's no good, it's never going to get done, you're a terrible writer, and you should just give up. You'd think, after publishing nine novels, that this would ease up, but so far, nope! The only thing that really chases away The Mid-Novel Blues is time -- and pushing through to about the 75% mark (where everything becomes exciting again).
